Kumakogen-cho Kuma Art Museum
Viewing art by MURAYAMA Kaita and KISHIDA Ryūsei in the warmth of a wooden interior
The art museum was built upon receiving a donation of a collection owned by IBE Yoshiharu, a businessman from Kuma. The museum holds approximately 1,000 pieces of art including oil paintings by leading modern western-style painters of Japan like MURAYAMA Kaita, KISHIDA Ryūsei, and YOROZU Tetsugorō, as well as Japanese paintings and calligraphic works and ceramics. The wooden structure, which is rare for an art museum, is supported by four main pillars in the exhibition space made of “sugi no migaki maruta” (polished cedar tree trunks) which Kuma is known for. Visitors enjoy the comfort of feeling as if they are in a forest.
